A law office, a case of wine.

The night the organization stopped being a once-a-year event, held in the law office at 185 Belmont Ave. that is still our mailing address.

For five years the whole organization had been one evening in September. In the spring of 2016 that changed. On Thursday April 28, from five to eight in the evening, a wine tasting and beer sampling ran inside the Dunn and Phillips law office at 185 Belmont Avenue in Springfield. Twenty dollars in advance, twenty-five at the door.

The Republican covered it that same morning, in the Weekend section, and the reporting is the best account of the group’s origins that exists anywhere. It recorded that the board was deliberately branching out and building more events so people would know who they were; that the organization dates to 2011 and its first signature Pink Mass at St. Michael’s Cathedral; and that it had been created in honor of a founding member, Rosa A. Dell’Aera-Smith, a Springfield resident diagnosed with breast cancer at 44, honored by the group in 2013, who died in 2014.

It also recorded the number that mattered. In the previous year the group had given a thousand dollars each to Cancer House of Hope in West Springfield, the Sister Caritas Cancer Center at Mercy Medical Center, the Baystate Health Foundation’s Rays of Hope, and LIVESTRONG at the YMCA of Greater Springfield. One gift, the board liked to say, helping five local organizations at once.

There is one more thing about that address. 185 Belmont Avenue, the law office where they poured the wine, is still the mailing address on the bottom of this website.
