The fifth year’s flyer is the plainest one in the binder. Bold type, no photograph, two anchors printed either side of the word Benefiting. September 12, 2015, six o’clock, the Elks Lodge banquet hall on Tiffany Street. Catered pasta dinner, a band called Diversion, raffle prizes plus more, cash bar. Twenty dollars for adults, five for children.
What changed that year was the list at the top. A fifth beneficiary had been added: LIVESTRONG at the YMCA, the twelve-week fitness and wellness program that the YMCA of Greater Springfield runs free of charge for adult cancer survivors. Alongside it were Cancer House of Hope, the Sisters of Providence Mercy Care Center, and Rays of Hope and prostate cancer care through the Baystate Health Foundation.
Five organizations, one twenty-dollar plate of pasta. That was the whole model.
